UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.

A World of Individual Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one remaining could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
