Two Cuba-Headed Humanitarian Sailboats Reported Lost following Setting Sail from Mexico.
A extensive rescue and recovery effort is currently under way in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing sailboats carrying relief goods journeying from Mexico to Cuba.
Maritime Search Efforts Launched
Mexico has sent naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of 9 personnel, per a official statement.
The ships had been expected to reach Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their arrival, authorities reported.
Background of Relief to Cuba
Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island grapples with repeated power outages across the country.
"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and each boat are outfitted with appropriate navigational gear and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort said.
The nine individuals on board are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are collaborating completely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Recent Aid Shipment
Earlier in the week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the country.
That vessel, nicknamed "a modern Granma" after the vessel in which Castro landed in Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, drugs, formula milk, bicycles and foodstuffs.
Wider Geopolitical Context
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded efforts to bring critical assistance to Cuba since January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the country came into effect.
The United Nations have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba because of energy rationing.
Political tensions have increased lately, with comments from several representatives highlighting the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.
Responding to certain proposals, a high-ranking Cuban official stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of discussions commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The naval forces said it was pledged to using all of the resources at its reach to locate the sailboats and secure the well-being of the people on board.
As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
