The Showrunner Discloses He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—the writers' room opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Viewer Reception
One could easily to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.
“There are some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
