Lando Norris Secures Debut F1 World Championship in Yas Marina Despite Verstappen's Race Win.

Through an exhibition of brave driving, Lando Norris has won his maiden Formula One world championship by achieving third place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. That finish was all that was required for the British driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished first and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished in second.

This moment was investigated by the race officials, with a few impossibly tense laps passing before a penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris settled the matter. This bold move without being held up was vital to his championship bid.

Contrasting Fortunes

While Norris became the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in fortunes between the two was pronounced. While the new generation battled over the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing ending to a difficult season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Scuderia had been met by enthusiasm but has yielded what was easily his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship without a top-three finish. He has looked jaded in the closing races and will aim to reset over the winter.
