Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
