Condemnation Explodes as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Criticism
Individuals from across the political divide and the Hollywood industry are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Statement
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to social media to label the late director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police Developments and Detention
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. It is reported his bail was set at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's post was swift and scathing.
This is a disgusting and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the statements. Goldberg pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Party
Some Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his political party to defend the statements.
The Director's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation after the killing of another political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
