Battlefield 6's Relaxed Playlist Ignites Intense Discussions Over Bots, Experience Points, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh game mode called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this option mirrors the standard Breakthrough setup but features several notable changes:
- Each team includes just 8 human participants, with the remaining filled by 32 bots.
- Actions performed by human gamers award complete experience points, while bot actions offer reduced XP.
- Just a pair of maps are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Elements like Player tags, achievements, and stat tracking are disabled.
So essentially, the playlist lives up to its title: it offers a laid-back take of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, as it gives additional choices for gamers seeking alternative ways to enjoy the game. But, if video games has shown one thing, it is that you can't please everyone. In other words, many Battlefield 6 fans are mad.
Community Responses: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Don't repeat the errors of your rivals," states one reply to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking idea," comments a different user. Meanwhile, in community forums, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," and someone else details all the issues they believe to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this bot mode."
However, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're liking the new mode. "It's enjoyable to warm up, real players keep it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," says one Reddit comment. "The community fails to see that there are players who have lives and can't play this title all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," states a different comment. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and another praises the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Constructive Concerns and Community Feedback
Despite the support, there are constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. A few folks have highlighted that it could increase wait times even longer for other modes because of the large amount of options currently available. On a similar note, some areas already encounter mostly bots in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on combat against bots.
Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that a previous feature was promised to offer full XP, including AI matches, but that was removed when they attempted to remove XP farming from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough feels like the community meeting them in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. Another describes this mode as the devs "making a mistake significantly, I had great enjoyment in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Future Prospects: Will Changes Be Made?
If the development team has demonstrated something to date with the latest installment, it's that they're paying attention and acting on feedback. Tasks being too difficult were adjusted rapidly, just like the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, should analytics indicates this recent mode is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
