As Swimmers Ran From Danger, Viral Picture Depicts Beach Patrol Running ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, similar to other others in the area, detected loud noises ringing out through the community.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. She left her residence, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore told her trouble had occurred.

While standing on the road, talking to a couple who had rushed up the incline still dripping wet, she noticed someone moving up at her rear. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. It was just him running in the path that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that big kit and without footwear … He’s running at something that surely every fibre in your being would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Courage In the Wake of Crisis

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of courage in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, officers and ambulance crews caring for many those hurt.

Local Response and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the location of the incident serving as a makeshift hospital. Accounts show that other team members were also seen helping out, for instance rushing into the water to save people who were struggling.

In the days after the attack, comments of appreciation were shared. One post expressed appreciation for the individuals who showed that “kindness will always conquer hatred”.

The group of beach patrol published a message, noting they were “processing what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your kind sentiments and solidarity. We are touched by the compassion for our responders,” the group wrote. “In time, we will tell our tales in the aim that it supports those affected.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many professional lifeguards, stated that the team performed exceptionally from the moment the incident began until late that evening.

“People have shared so many moving narratives, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” said a council representative.

“The team demonstrate selflessness every day in keeping our iconic beaches secure for visitors, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.

“While we mourn and process the terror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much positivity we have observed in the midst of such evil.”
