The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
