A Account of Surprising Generosity: When a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to book accommodation upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could spend the night at the airport – but soon learned that airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes 24 hours. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and started wandering towards a gaming venue, reasoning it was a place to spend those hours in an establishment that stayed open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for acing a crucial interview the next day, but as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.
I must have looked out of place since a woman spotted me wandering around the city and wondered if I was OK. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she said I was welcome to sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at the Australian National University – which was perfect, given that my my interview was the following day. She even offered some food: one of the filled rolls she had taken home her work shift. I was able to use the bathroom and somewhere safe to rest for the evening.
With hindsight, I now understand the significant risk she undertook as a woman inviting a man who was a complete stranger stay in her room. At that time I existed within my male privilege bubble and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she did that – yet deeply appreciative.
I never did go to ANU, and I never saw the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of human compassion. It is my wish life has rewarded her act of kindness abundantly. The world needs more folks like that woman.
